Sarah: Mommy, why are knives sharp?
Me: Because they need to be sharp to cut things.
Sarah: Why do we need to cut things?
Me: Because we need to make things into smaller pieces.
Sarah: Why do we use knives?
I thought I had just clarifed that but I continued..
Me: Because.
Sarah: But, why don't we just use a saw?
This is Rachel. She fell asleep during the Tom and Jerry hour today and she still has those thigh butts. I'm going to savor them while they last.
Because a saw is too big, and knives are much easier to keep clean. (Depending on the knife, a knife can be a baby saw. Much easier to use than a grown-up saw.)
